Moving to Portugal: documents, costs and tips
Portugal is one of Brazilians' favorite destinations, for the language, the safety and the ease of settling in. Taking your belongings there is entirely possible, as long as you plan the documentation and the transport in advance. Here are the essentials.
How the transport works
Most moves to Portugal are done by sea (container), more economical for large volumes, with a lead time of a few weeks. The air mode is faster and used for smaller volumes or urgent items. The choice depends on how much you are taking and how much of a hurry you are in.
Documentation you will need
The requirements may change, but in general you will need:
- A valid passport;
- A visa or residence permit (or proof of status to live in Portugal);
- An NIF (Portuguese Tax Identification Number), usually required;
- A detailed list of belongings (inventory) with descriptions and values;
- Proof of residence in Brazil and at the destination.
Unaccompanied baggage and customs
Your personal belongings travel under the unaccompanied baggage regime, that is, separately from you. For used goods, there is usually a tax exemption when they are tied to a change of residence, provided the requirements and deadlines of Portuguese customs are met. A good inventory and the correct paperwork are what ensure a smooth clearance.
Costs and timelines
The price depends on the volume (how many cubic meters), the mode (sea or air), the destination city and the services (packing, insurance, clearance). Because they are so variable, international moves are quoted case by case, so the best move is to request an assessment.
Tips to plan
- Start 2 to 3 months in advance, international documentation takes time;
- Carry documents and valuables with you;
- Take the chance to declutter: the smaller the volume, the lower the cost;
- Hire someone who coordinates customs on both sides.
